HOD Message
It is a matter of great pleasure for me to welcome you to the department of Economics. We started off with undergraduate program in economics in 2008 and built on its success, the MPhil/PhD program in economics was launched in year 2013. Since then, a significant number of students have been graduated and already working in the public and private sector organizations. The entire faculty at the department adheres to high values of professionalism, integrity, team work, commitment, merit, hard work and more importantly the collective social responsibility. In the changing scenario of instruction technology, the constructive theory of learning has become the mainstay of the teaching learning process. For this reason, the emphasis in our department is to help the students to develop strong analytical and other skills and acquire the ability to critically assess economic arguments, which help to strengthen the link between university and industry in this era of evolving technology. Our motto is that students of this department must be able to compete with all the countries of South Asia at least as we follow the HEC standardized syllabus and other terms and conditions in all the programs. The increasing strength of the students in the entire program is evident from the accelerated growth of the department. Introduction
The Department of Economics is one of the largest department in the Faculty of Arts. It was established in 2008. Professor Salauddin was appointed as the first head of department, and served the department for 4 years. Later Dr Sohail Farooq served as head of department for 3 and half years. Dr Misbah Nosheen is now heading the department along with the support of dedicated and professional faculty members. Knowledge of economics is indispensable to those interested in current affairs, particularly now and in recent years. The core of the teaching programme, ensuring you are provided with an up-to-date curriculum, which touches on the key theoretical and policy issues of the day. Being our student, you will benefit from joining a learning community, where you will have the opportunity to interact with department staff and your colleagues to increase your knowledge and gain an in-depth understanding of current issues in economics. Here you will have the opportunity to develop an interest in fields such as Economics of Education, SMEs in Pakistan, government policy, and developing countries, the economics of business, and international trade and finance. Economics students will be numerate and acquire skills in research, communication, team working, analysis, decision making and problem solving. Our student body is diverse, with more than 300 students, many of whom come from around Pakistan spread over from Gilgit to Baluchistan and even from Afghanistan. A PhD is increasingly necessary for a successful academic career, and is also becoming an important distinguishing qualification for those who aspire to top positions in business and politics etc. We provide research students with challenging and high-quality training in the theory and practice of research in economics. As a research graduate, you will be equipped to design and conduct high-quality research. We offer PhD programme in the department, aimed at those who wish to become experts in a specialized field. Our research interests lies in the areas of Relative performance of Pakistan SME’s; Micro Analysis of Firms; Economics of Innovation, Production, Energy, Education and Health; Poverty and income inequality; FDI, Foreign Aid and Trade; Human Capital and Environmental and resource economics among others

The department envisions achieving high standards of academic performance to provide quality education to students, equip students with knowledge and skills in their chosen stream and to provide opportunities for students to realize their full potential and thus shape them into future leaders to address the emerging global challenges and to deal with economic, social and business realities.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Economics at Hazara University is to provide, through both teaching and research, a better understanding of the global, national and local economic issues that will confront our society now and in the future. The department’s teaching mission is to offer rigorous undergraduate and graduate degree programs with emphasis on the relationship of theory to practice and use of hands-on research assignments. It places a particularly strong emphasis on students, incorporating independent learning experiences, extensive student-professor interaction, and the maintenance of a friendly, supportive environment for all students. The department’s research mission is to develop an environment conducive to promoting applied research. Applied research is work that informs policy at the global, national or local level, or that is useful in the conduct of business, or the administration of government or non-profit activities. A related objective and natural outcome of our research effort is to incorporate both graduate and undergraduate students into the process....
